Frequently Asked Questions

1. How to chose the right therapist.

The most important thing to consider when choosing a therapist is to find someone you feel comfortable talking to. I recommend scheduling consultations with a few different therapists and 'window shop' before making a decision.

2. What to expect when starting individual therapy.

Therapy typically starts with the first one-two sessions covering life history (such as family, friends, work, school). I recomend scheduling your first four-five sessions over the span of two-months. This typically ensures enough time to cover history and begin working towards your goals. After these first few sessions you should have an idea of what to expect from therapy, how to apply techniques to your unique circumstance, and decide how you want sessions to show up in your life going forward (e.g., increasing or decreasing frequency).

3. What to expect when starting couples therapy.

Couples therapy will begin with one session together where we'll cover your relationship history (how long you've been together, what the beginning looked like, how does conflict look). Next, each partner will attend an individual session strictly focused on attachment history - family, friends, and previous partners. The remainder of sessions will be both partners together. We will unpack how your unique histories are contributing to negative cycles of interaction, identfy specific areas of improvement, and provide tools to impliment change and foster greater communication skills.

4. Will my insurance cover these services?

Most insurance providers cover Psychotherapy services. It is recommended that you review your insurance policy or contact your insurance provider directly to check that services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist are covered. RvR Psychotherapy is not responsible for ensuring coverage of services.

5. What theories do you use in therapy?

Psychotherapy services are grounded in Attachment Theory. Interventions are informed by Acceptance and Committment Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Narrative Therapy. Depending where you are in your therapeutic journey, your service will be tailored to meet you where your at and utilize the approach that is most suited for your circumstances.
